The newest, cutting-edge approach to designing websites is called responsive web design. Everyone’s talking about it; responsive design has become the new buzzword in web design circles; and even Google has officially recommended the use of responsive web design. So, what exactly is it?
Simply put, responsive web design involves creating websites that are able to detect a visitor’s device and browser size and then customize the page display to fit that particular device and browser. On a responsive design website, images will adjust in size and page layouts will shift as you resize your browser window on any device. Even better, the entire website view will actually adapt to fit different computer devices. If you open a responsive website on a desktop or laptop, the site will automatically display in the optimal format for desktop screens; if you open the same site on your mobile phone, however, you will see that the size, format and even amount of content displayed will change to fit the reduced screen size.
This is all accomplished through the initial website design, creation and coding. The same HTML code is used for each page for all devices, yet the way the page is presented is able to change due to CSS media queries that specify which CSS rules apply for the particular browser that is currently displaying the page.
The responsive approach to designing a website provides an optimal user experience. Visitors to the website can freely access the site using multiple devices, can easily read the content, and can navigate the site with little or no need for resizing or scrolling. In today’s age of multiple devices and mobile technology, the advantages of responsive design websites are clear, you can read our post “five reasons why you need a responsive design website”
